Mesopotamian idol statuette
A wonderful terracotta idol statuette intended to represent Astarte, a goddess known throughout the ancient Near East for her associations with femininity, childbirth, and war.
A hand-modeled statuette of a female deity (Astarte) with her hands resting on her breasts and a bird-like face. The eyes are pierced discs. On her head is a tall, circular crown. The lower body is not emphasized.
The avian figure stands upright, its body shaped like a torso with two arms supporting its breasts. Its ancient face is pinched, dominated by a large, beak-like nose and a pair of pierced eyes. It is adorned with a wide collar.
A very fine piece in excellent condition
Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Euphrates Valley, 3rd / 2nd millennium BC (2100 to 1700 BC).
